Watch the Film “Downtown Cinema”.. Who Went Abroad and Left Their Heart Here

A group of young people driven by their love for downtown Cairo translated that love and nostalgia for the past into their project, “Downtown Cinema.”
“Downtown Cinema” is a short film lasting nearly four minutes. Through it, the director conveyed his feelings by capturing scenes from most of downtown’s streets, famous shops, and historic buildings. With a short text accompanying the scenes in the film, the director revived nostalgia for downtown among its admirers.

In an interview with “My District,” the film’s director Hady Sayed says: “At first, downtown was one of the places closest to my heart, because I grew up there and my childhood was connected to every inch of it. I lived there with my family. As the years passed, I traveled abroad for work, but my love for downtown remained inside me. During my last vacation, I decided to create the “Downtown Cinema” project to tell the brief story of my relationship with downtown.

Filming the movie took approximately five months. Hady enlisted Mohamed Reda, one of his relatives, who also grew up in downtown. Using their mobile-phone cameras, he and the director managed to capture details of the downtown streets that had been connected to their childhood.

The film was completed with a score by Ahmed Antakia, the music arranger, along with expressive words written by poet Mostafa Aswany, one of the director’s friends, who also grew up downtown. He produced words that touched the hearts of those longing for downtown.
