Economist and investor, chief economic adviser at Allianz, former CEO and co-chief investment officer of PIMCO (2007 to 2014), and president of Queens' College, Cambridge from 2020 to 2025. His parents are Egyptian: Abdullah El-Erian, a diplomat who later sat as a judge at the International Court of Justice, and Nadia Shoukry. The family followed his father's postings between Egypt, New York and France. He spent part of his early childhood in Egypt, received an honorary doctorate from the American University in Cairo in 2011, and has made major gifts to the Children's Cancer Hospital in Egypt.
