In earlier times, wealthy philanthropists would “endow” some of their properties to charitable causes, in what was known as the waqf system.
This photograph shows Delbaron Hanem Shukri Primary School, which she built in 1923 in the neo-Mamluk style. She endowed 120 feddans of some of her properties to support the school’s female students from poor families and also contribute to the marriage expenses of students who completed their studies.
On the outside wall of the school is a water fountain bearing the same woman’s name, but it is now sealed.
Today, all these properties have passed to the Ministry of Awqaf, while the school has become a state school.
