Summit and Kitchen: Two Egyptian Entrepreneurs Who Started from Zero

The entrepreneurial spirit in Egypt does not look like Silicon Valley. It looks like Omar Samra standing at the summit of Everest, or Nada Deraz in a Cairo apartment wondering if home-cooked food could become a platform. Samra's story defies easy categorization. He is an adventurer who became an entrepreneur, or perhaps an entrepreneur who needed adventure to think clearly. After becoming the youngest Egyptian to summit Everest, he did not retire to a speaking circuit. He founded Wild Guanabana, a sustainable travel company, and Nahdet El Mahrousa, a social enterprise incubator that has launched dozens of Egyptian impact startups. His thesis is simple: Egypt's biggest problems need founders who have stared down mountain faces and decided to keep climbing. Deraz's origin story is more intimate but no less ambitious. Mumm started from a recognition that Egyptian homes contain some of the best food in the country, cooked by women whose culinary talents had no commercial outlet. The platform connected home cooks with hungry customers and, in doing so, created economic independence for hundreds of Egyptian women. Forbes 30 Under 30 took notice. What links Samra and Deraz is their rejection of the conventional career path. Neither took the safe route: engineering degree to corporate job to comfortable retirement. Both saw gaps in Egyptian life that no existing institution was filling, and both built something from nothing to fill them. They represent a generation of Egyptian founders who measure success not in valuation but in lives changed.
