Built between 1918 and 1921 as the Teatro Mohamed Ali and inaugurated in the presence of King Fouad I, this 1,200-seat Renaissance Revival theatre was renamed after the 1952 revolution and has carried composer Sayed Darwish's name since 1962. Long neglected, it was placed on Egypt's Heritage List in 2000, restored, and reopened in 2004.
