Al-Azhar Mosque was commissioned by the Fatimid caliphate in 970 AD and completed in 972, making it one of Cairo's oldest mosques, though not the oldest in the city, the Mosque of Amr ibn al-As (642) and the Mosque of Ibn Tulun (879) both predate it. Its attached religious school grew over the centuries into Al-Azhar University, one of the world's oldest institutions of higher learning, reorganised as a modern state university in 1961.
