The Bibliotheca Alexandrina opened in Chatby, Alexandria, on 16 October 2002, after twelve years of construction to a design by the Norwegian firm Snøhetta. The circular, tilting building is 160 metres across and holds a stepped reading room of about 20,000 square metres with seating for roughly 2,000 readers, plus storage capacity for up to eight million books. The complex also houses several museums and a planetarium.
