The Cosmopolitan opened in the 1920s as the Metropolitan Hotel, built by Swiss hotelier Charles Baehler, who also ran the Semiramis and Shepheard's. Its belle-époque facade of rounded corners and arcaded balconies sits in Downtown Cairo's Stock Exchange district, steps from the Egyptian Stock Exchange and the Central Bank of Egypt. It is now state-run, part of the EGOTH hotel group.
