Housed in a restored early-20th-century mansion on Tariq al-Horreya that once served as the US consulate, the museum traces Alexandria's history from the Pharaonic era through Ptolemaic, Roman, Byzantine, Islamic and Ottoman times. Its roughly 1,800 pieces include statues, jewellery, coins, sarcophagi and mummies, among them underwater finds recovered from Abu Qir Bay. It opened in 2003.
