Alexandria Stadium opened in 1929 under King Fouad I and is described as the oldest stadium still standing in Egypt and Africa. Designed by Russian architect Vladimir Nicohosov with Islamic-influenced detailing, it hosted the 1951 Mediterranean Games and several Africa Cup of Nations matches, and remains home to Al Ittihad club after a 2016 to 17 renovation reduced capacity to about 13,660.
