Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa
A three-level Roman-era tomb complex discovered by a falling donkey
About
Cut into bedrock in the 2nd century CE as a family necropolis, these catacombs in the Karmouz district descend about 35 metres through several levels via a spiral staircase once used to lower coffins. Their statues and reliefs blend Egyptian, Greek and Roman styles in a single decorative scheme. The site was found by accident in 1900 when a donkey fell into a shaft.
