Sultan Qaitbay built this coastal fortress between 1477 and 1479 on the tip of Pharos Island, at the exact site of the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria, reusing stones from the fallen wonder in its walls. It guarded the harbour against naval attack and remains one of the Mediterranean's best-preserved medieval Islamic fortifications.
