The museum grew from 210 works gifted to Alexandria in 1904 by Edward Farid Heim, who required that a building be raised to house them. Its holdings since expanded with Orientalist paintings from Mohammed Mahmoud Khalil and works from Cairo's Museum of Modern Art. It has hosted the Biennale for Mediterranean Countries since 1955.
