Egypt's only surviving Roman theatre, unearthed at Kom El Dikka
About
Rediscovered in 1960 after the district of Kom El Dikka had been forgotten for centuries, this marble-tiered theatre (or odeon) is the only known Roman theatre in Egypt. Dated by the antiquities ministry to the Roman and Byzantine periods, the 2nd to 6th centuries AD, the site also includes the mosaic-floored Villa of the Birds and remains of Roman baths with hypocaust heating.
