About
Al Azbakeya Garden occupies land that was once a Mamluk-era lake given to army commander Azbak in the 15th century. Khedive Ismail had the lake filled in 1864 and opened a formal park here in 1872, styled after Parisian gardens. It became a hub of Cairo cultural life, hosting concerts by Umm Kulthum and other leading singers, before a road cut through it after the 1952 Cairo fire.
