A 74-acre park built over a centuries-old rubble mound in medieval Cairo

Opened in 2005 after a project funded with more than $30 million by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, Al-Azhar Park transformed a centuries-old rubble mound in the al-Darb al-Ahmar district into 30 hectares of landscaped gardens overlooking the Citadel and the minarets of Islamic Cairo. The project also uncovered and restored a 12th-century Ayyubid wall running through the site.
