Laid out in 1867 as part of Khedive Ismail's private Zamalek grounds and opened to the public in 1902, the Aquarium Grotto Garden takes its name from man-made caves that once held dozens of fish tanks. The aquariums stopped operating years ago and now sit empty or hold preserved specimens, but the garden itself, with its grottoes and greenery, remains open as a public park.
