Built in 1794 by Ibrahim Katkhuda al-Sinnari, this Ottoman-era house was requisitioned in 1798 to shelter the Committee of Sciences and Arts that Napoleon Bonaparte brought to Egypt, whose research produced the Description de l'Egypte. Damaged in the 1992 earthquake and later restored with French, Egyptian, and UNESCO support, it is now run by the Bibliotheca Alexandrina as a cultural center near Sayeda Zeinab.
