El Tahrir Square
The 19th-century square that became the epicenter of Egypt's 2011 revolution

Laid out under Khedive Ismail as Ismailia Square, it was popularly renamed Tahrir (Liberation) Square after the 1919 revolution and made official in 1953. It became world-famous in 2011, when eighteen days of protest here forced President Hosni Mubarak's resignation. In 2020 the government installed a Ramses II obelisk moved from Tanis and four ram-headed sphinxes moved from Karnak at its center.
