Housed in the early-20th-century Giza villa of politician and collector Mohamed Mahmoud Khalil, the museum opened in 1962 with his personal collection of more than 300 paintings and dozens of sculptures, including works by Monet, Renoir, Gauguin, and van Gogh. The government requisitioned the building from 1971 to 1993, and a 2010 theft closed it again until a renovation reopened it in 2021.
