About
Opened in 1962 on Cairo's Gezira Island opposite the Opera House, the museum was designed by architect Ramses Wissa Wassef to hold eighty-five works in bronze, granite, marble, and basalt by sculptor Mahmoud Mokhtar (1891-1934), regarded as the founder of modern Egyptian sculpture. One room is devoted to nationalist leader Saad Zaghloul, and Mokhtar is buried in the building's basement.
