This Saint George's Church belongs to the Coptic Orthodox Convent of St. George (Deir Mar Girgis), a women's convent built into the old walls of the Babylon Fortress in Old Cairo. It is a separate building from the well-known round Greek Orthodox Church of St. George that stands on the fortress's northern tower nearby. The convent includes a shrine traditionally associated with St. George and remains home to a community of nuns.
