About
Qasr El-Nile Bridge links what is now Tahrir Square to Zamalek and Gezira Island. An earlier iron bridge on the site opened in 1872 under Khedive Ismail; it was dismantled and rebuilt by 1933, when King Fuad I opened the current structure. Its four bronze lion statues, sculpted by French artist Alfred Jacquemart, were originally commissioned for the gates of the Giza Zoo before Khedive Tawfiq had them placed at the bridge's entrances instead.
